The Lion Ledger: 05/31/2026

Families,

This is our 40th and final edition of The Lion Ledger for this school year! It continues to be an absolute honor to serve as the proud principal of Bexley Middle School and to have completed my first year as building principal this past week. Thank you for your continued support. As the African proverb says, “It takes a village,” and your partnership makes an incredible difference.

Last week, we received wonderful news as a middle school: Bexley Middle School is among more than 150 schools across the country to be named a School of Distinction by Jostens Renaissance! BMS was awarded Silver Distinction for its work toward building a positive school climate and culture during the 2025-26 school year. Our recent recognition building this foundation places BMS in the top 2% of Renaissance schools.

We had a very busy final week of school. From Field Day to Yearbook Signing Day, students had opportunities to connect and celebrate during the final days of school. More specifically, we held our 8th Grade Recognition Ceremony honoring many of our outgoing 8th grade students. I would like to once again congratulate our Laurel Honor Society inductees as well as our Tim Stowe, Justin Haas, and Laura Gardner Joy of Music Award recipients. Additionally, kudos to our WEB leaders, Students of the Month, and Student Superlative winners! A huge shout-out to Mrs. Maria Zeman and Mrs. Michelle Rowley-Welsch, our 8th-grade team leaders, who did an outstanding job organizing much of the schoolwide ceremony. Also, a big thank you to our 8th grade staff for their support in helping to identify our award recipients.

Next school year, all middle school students will continue to have access to their own lockers. For the upcoming 2026-2027 school year, one shift we will make is requiring all middle school students to keep their backpacks in their lockers throughout the school day. Students will be able to use their lockers to pick up and return personal belongings during the school day. Please note that students who have specific safety / medical needs and/or plans may have access to their backpacks in class. This move will support student and staff safety. We appreciate your support in communicating and preparing your child for this shift when we return to school in August.

Looking ahead, we will hold our student schedule pick-up day on Thursday, August 6. There, students will have an opportunity to pick up their student schedules, take their individual school pictures, pick up their yearbook and supply kit as well as complete their vision screening, tour the building and practice using their locker. See details below in this Lion Ledger edition. Additionally, we will continue our staggered start for the 2026-27 school year. Our incoming 6th grade students will start school on Thursday, August 13. All middle school students (grades 6-8) will attend school on Friday, August 14. School begins at 8:35am.

I hope you have a wonderful summer with your families and loved ones. To our current 6th and 7th grade students, we look forward to seeing you back in August! To our 8th grade class, all the best in high school!

Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours!
