Special Board Meeting Scheduled for Presentation on Facilities Upgrades Recommendation & Financing Proposal

There will be a special meeting of the Bexley Board of Education next Thursday, Nov. 20, for Board members to hear presentations in relation to proposed facilities upgrades, including a recommendation for a facilities cost proposal and suggested financing, as well as results of the district’s recent community survey.

The facilities presentation will be made by two members of the district’s combined Finance Advisory Council and Facilities Advisory Committee, which is comprised of Bexley residents. The combined group has worked over the past year to study and consider the District Facilities Plan and how to fund Phase I of facilities upgrades.

Its recommendation for the Board to consider will include what Phase I of our building and property upgrades could include; how the project could be financed; the cost threshold of a financing request; and when it is recommended the district seek financing.

Paul Fallon, whose company is Fallon Research & Communication, also will present the results of the district’s recent community survey focusing on Bexley’s school facilities. The survey was conducted to help ensure Bexley City Schools are developing priorities that the broader community can align with in relation to the District Facilities Plan. We will post results of the community survey on the district website.

In addition, during yesterday’s regular Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jason Fine informed the Board that the district was unexpectedly approached by interested parties outside of the district who are interested in purchasing or leasing parts of the schools’ North Cassady Avenue property. Dr. Fine told the Board he would keep them and the community updated on this matter.

Next week’s special Board meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Bexley City Hall and will be livestreamed. There is no public comment during special Board meetings.

Board Receives Progress Update on Special Education Review Recommendations

As a follow up to a presentation in August, members of the Bexley Board of Education received an update on the district’s work providing special education services. Yesterday evening’s presentation focused on Year 1 of the recommendations of the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio (ESCCO), which completed a year-long special education review last school year.

Chief Academic Officer Casey Cosgray explained there were four goals of the ESCCO review, which were to evaluate Bexley Schools’ special education design and structure; faculty and staff capacity; instruction specifically related to delivering services to students with special needs; and overall effectiveness of the communication and collaboration that goes along with those services.

Dr. Aimee White, director of student services and accessibility, and Lizzie Kiser, special education coordinator, informed the Board of the district’s work thus far this school year providing MTSS services – Multi-Tiered System of Supports – to students. Dr. White explained, “MTSS is meeting the needs of our students where they’re at academically, but also socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.”

You are encouraged to watch Dr. White’s and Ms. Kiser’s presentation online, which is available on the district’s YouTube channel. | Special Education Update Presentation Slides

High School Art Students Create Beautiful Landscape Art

With the popular landscape works of artists Kay WalkingStick and Georgia O’Keefe as inspiration, students in Dr. Mabi Ponce de Leon’s painting classes created their own memorable works of art.

The project prompt, she said, was for students to think about a place that is special to them and to focus on painting the way they feel about the place, rather than just the physical place.

See some of the students’ beautiful works below.

Mr. Hensley was recognized by a Cassingham Elementary faculty member for Demonstrating Kindness, one of the three mission pillars of the district. In his nomination, the teacher wrote that Mr. Hensley’s level of professionalism and kindness were immeasurable as he helped her get organized and ready for the new school year.
