Industry Insight Event a First for Bexley High School Seniors

Image is of a large group of high school students and adults sitting at multiple tables speaking and making presentations to each other

High School teacher Rachel Lilly charged her senior English students with researching the “State of the Industry” for their chosen career paths, including industry trends, requirements, and outlook for the future.

What did they get right? What can no textbook teach them regarding the industry?

That’s what 26 local industry professionals, including several members of the Bexley Schools staff, offered in the high school’s first Industry Insight event last week.

There was a lot of energy and excitement in the high school gymnasium during the Industry Insight Showcase, when small groups of students interacted with at least one professional in the field they may pursue. After presenting their formal research, the seniors heard from the experts on the state of the industry and prospects for the future. The visitors also shared feedback on whether student research was on par with where the professionals believe the field is trending.

Many thanks to the visiting professionals who volunteered their time to meet with Bexley students! Experts from the fields of medicine, finance, engineering, business, aviation, public service, healthcare, film/TV, technology, science, law, food service, and education took part in the event.

To prepare for the Industry Insight event, Ms. Lilly said students completed a research unit in which they had the opportunity to investigate a career they want to pursue and students first presented their research to their peers. “Some students were able to confirm that they still want to pursue this career,” she said. “Other students learned that this career isn’t the path they want to pursue. No less of an important revelation!”

Following the Showcase event, students from Marybeth Motasem’s Personal Finance class also had a chance to mingle and network with the professionals, while enjoying coffee and a light breakfast made by Mrs. Motasem’s Healthy Cuisine class.

According to Bexley’s Leader of Experiential Learning Chad Hemmelgarn, the students are learning about wealth building, salaries, and the cost of living. “They want to hear from the experts about the financial journey of a professional,” he said. He also worked with students to set up a LinkedIn account, helping them learn how the tool can help them identify connections and more strategically leverage their networks to reach professionals in their field.

Ms. Lilly said students also worked in small groups to practice real-world skills, including writing professional emails, professionally greeting someone, understanding meeting etiquette, and making a professional phone call or leaving a voicemail.

In sharing that she hopes to make this an annual event, Ms. Lilly said it is also her hope that her students “will find these skills useful as they begin their own professional journeys.”

Living Museum Brings Cassingham 2nd Graders’ Work to Life

What an exciting morning at Cassingham Elementary School last week, seeing lessons and learning come together through the eyes of young students, when 2nd-grade students presented a Living Museum.

As part of their study of civil rights in the Wit and Wisdom curriculum, the students selected a person to study who has responded to injustice. The students researched how to determine defining moments of their person’s life, created a timeline, and drafted a paragraph describing how the person fought injustice. The lesson’s objective was to learn how people can respond to injustices in the world.

Their work culminated in last week’s Living Museum presentation. With many family members in attendance, students dressed as the person they studied, presented their research on a display board, and were ready to answer questions about their research.

Middle School Students Share History, Heritage in School’s Second Multicultural Fair

Nearly 70 middle school students participated in Bexley Middle School’s second Multicultural Fair last week, with students from social studies classes taking in the presentations during class time throughout the school day.

More than twice as many students as last year’s inaugural event signed up to participate this year, with over 30 countries being represented. The students shared cultural information of their own country of origin, and many offered food samples related to their heritage or culture.

Countries from across the globe and most continents were represented by student-presenters, including Austria, Colombia, Egypt, England, Ireland, Italy, Nigeria, and the Philippines, as well as the United States and the Delaware Tribe.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in this event! Thank you also to all of the faculty and staff who supported their efforts.
