Closing/Delay Procedures

A school calamity day may be called for extreme cold or impassable sidewalks that would force students to walk to school on the roads.

Our goal is to declare calamity days by 6 a.m. and notify students, families, and staff as quickly as possible. In such an event, an email and text message will be sent, and a phone call will be made to all staff and parents/guardians.

We also will post an alert on our district website, share information on our Facebook, Instagram, and X feeds, and notify local media regarding our schools’ status. 

2-Hour Delay Scenario

A 2-hour-delay schedule when it appears likely that rising temperatures or extra time may create safer road and sidewalk conditions.

During a delayed school day, we will abide by the following start and end times:

Elementary Schools - 10:10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Middle School - 10:35 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

High School - 10:35 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Additionally, the following applies during a 2-hour-delay school day: 

  • The middle and high schools will follow a shortened period schedule.
  • Lunch will be served, but breakfast will NOT be available for students.
  • IEP meetings and teacher office hours scheduled prior to 10 a.m. would be canceled.
  • There would be no elementary band or orchestra.
  • Evening events would be held as scheduled.*
  • Bexley Park and Recreation would be unable to provide care before school.

 *A change in evening events may occur if weather conditions decline.

Extracurricular Events During School Cancellations

If school is canceled due to poor weather, a decision will be made by 1 p.m. regarding the status of after-school and evening sporting and other extracurricular activities. A separate message will be sent with this decision around 1 p.m. and information will be posted on social media and the district website.

Calamity Days

Procedures for Calamity Days 4-6: If the district encounters a 4th, 5th, or 6th calamity day during a school year, then building administrators and teachers will communicate expectations with students and parents/guardians by 10:00 a.m. on the day of a calamity day. Additionally, staff members will provide review work to students, as well as host voluntary office hours to support students and families. This may be done remotely.


Procedures for Calamity Day 7 & Beyond: Per the district’s Online Learning Plan, (which is required by the State of Ohio) on the 7th calamity day and beyond, students will be expected to “attend” some virtual synchronized sessions, as well as asynchronized independent learning activities and complete their assigned work. New instructions, completed assignments, and student feedback will be delivered to students virtually using the school’s learning management system. More information about how Bexley Schools would implement the district’s Online Learning Plan will be provided to parents/guardians and students if it appears the district could reach at least 7 calamity days during a school year.
