What Do I Do if My Child Is Struggling
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is the district’s integrated framework for ensuring that every student receives the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support needed to be successful. It is a prevention-oriented, data-driven system that emphasizes strong core instruction for all, timely identification of needs, and coordinated interventions that increase in intensity based on student response.
Through MTSS, universal screening occurs multiple times per year (Fall, Winter and Spring) and guides how teachers adjust core instruction, small-group supports, and, when needed, more intensive interventions. Each of our schools participate in regular review of common assessments as a way to inform how teachers can adjust instruction and to determine needed support.
If your student is struggling in any area, you will be contacted by a representative of the school’s MTSS team who will explain the nature of the concern and the suggested interventions to address it. You can bring concerns to your building principal, too. He or she will work with the MTSS team to analyze all available data, and to determine next steps.
When a student continues to struggle or exhibits limited growth even with multiple interventions over time, it might be necessary to conduct an evaluation for special education. The evaluation is done to determine whether or not the student requires specially designed instruction.
